Analyse the downtime of your assets and measure the impact of corrective events on your fleet

Updated over a week ago

The downtime analysis feature enables you to analyse and measure the downtime of your fleet, measure the immobilisation time of your assets and helps you to find out the leading cause for certain defects or localise the source of the issue.

In order to categorise the main defect causes of your corrective events and analyse the downtime of your fleet in the "Downtime analysis" module, you first have to set up fault category groups in the administration panel.

Fault category groups

As a Railnova company admin, you can create fault categories groups by navigating in the admin menu to Railfleet, then "Fault categories groups" under the section maintenance data.

On the overview page, you can view all fault category groups that have been created by your organisation. To create a new one, click on the green "Add Fault Category Group" button.

A new window will appear, where you need to define the following:

  • key: it can be a number, a text or a combination thereof

  • label: in at least one of the available languages (English, French, Dutch, German, Italian or Swedish)

  • company: your company name has been predefined already, and this is the only one you can pick from the dropdown list. No further actions are required from you here.

  • fault categories: add a new one by clicking on the blue link "Add another Fault Codes". The maximum number of fault categories is unlimited. It is important to tick the box "active" to activate the categories so they will appear when closing a corrective event and in the Downtime Analysis.

    • add a key which can be a number but also a text. (please note that each key needs to have a different name, and they can't be identical.)

    • add a name (please note that all names need to be different and can't be identical)

Once you're finished with your entry, don't forget to click on the blue "Save" button in the upper right corner of your screen.

After you have set up your fault categories, the fault category field will automatically be available when you close a defect report. Simply choose a fault category from the dropdown list before closing the event.
Note that you'll only be able to choose a fault category for the assets of which you're the ECM.

Please note that even if you do not have access to this module, the field will appear when you close a corrective event, but the field remains blank by default, and no action is required from you.

It may also be possible that when you close a corrective event, the fault category field appears with categories in the drop-down list, but your company did not create those categories. This means that another company is ECM of the asset, and that company has created its own fault categories.

Once you have set up your fault categories and are using them in your corrective events, you can start analysing the data in the "Downtime analysis" module.

Downtime analysis

The Downtime Analysis module is directly available from the homepage under the section Railfleet.

In case you do not have access yet and are interested in this module, please contact our Sales team.

The "Downtime Analysis" page is divided into three sections:

  • Filters

  • Diagrams

  • Events to categorise

Filters

With the filters, you can narrow down your search to

  • asset(s) or asset class(es)

  • label(s)

  • status impact (immobilised, operational, degraded)

  • date range (you can set a custom range by entering the data manually or use one of the quick ranges, e.g. yesterday, today, last hour, etc.)

  • search an event by its number via the search bar

Diagrams

To analyse the downtime of your assets, you can review and analyse data visualised in three different overviews:

  • impact status

  • immobilisation time

  • train impact

You can switch between the diagrams by clicking on the respective tab.

Impact Status

The information under the tab impact status shows you the most commonly occurring defect and fault reasons of your fleet.

It shows the impact on the asset status by category. When using the filters in the upper right corner, as marked in the picture below, you can visualise the results by operational status: immobilised (red), operational (green) and degraded mode (orange).

When hovering over a fault category, you can gain more insight into it and see how many defect reports have occurred in the reviewed time period and their impact on the operational status.

Immobilisation time

This overview shows you the immobilisation time by category: this refers only to the duration of the "immobilised" operational status.

When hovering over a fault category, you can gain more insight into it and see how many days of immobilisation have been caused by this fault category in the reviewed time period.

Train impact

Train impact shows the impact on traffic for each category.

When hovering over a fault category, you can gain more insight into it and see in how many cases it had no impact at all, in how many cases the train has been delayed or cancelled, or a rescue request has been filed.

Events to categorise

You can categorise your events directly in the Downtime Analysis module by navigating to the list of events and filtering on the date opened (newest to oldest). Here you can see all open and closed events to categorise.

  • When the event is open: you can select a functional breakdown structure from the dropdown list and click OK. This allows you to assign a category to the event even without closing it. You can select a fault category on the downtime analysis page for an open event, but it will not appear in the event itself. When you close the event, you'll still have to select a fault category! Categorising an event here only makes sense if you want the open event to appear in the Excel download (see below).

  • When the event is closed: you can click on the pen icon, select a functional breakdown structure from the dropdown list and click OK.

Export to Excel

When working in the Downtime analysis module, you have the option to export your filtered search results to Excel by clicking on the blue "Export to Excel" button right above the list of events to categorise on the right side of your screen.

A very detailed report will show you the following:

  • the name of the locomotive

  • the class of the locomotive

  • the status of the event

  • description

  • observation

  • the date when it was opened

  • the date when it was closed

  • the name of the fault category linked to it

  • classification status

  • impact on traffic

  • impact on status

  • duration in days

Please note that only events with a fault category will appear in the exported file.
