With Railfleet you can be informed whenever an asset enters a new geographical zone. But before you can receive a notification when an asset enters a certain zone you first need to set up the notification rule.

In this article you can find a step-by-step guide on how to set up "inside zone" notification rules. For general information about notification rules, please take a look at the following article: Creating notification rules.

To create a notification rule you need to be a Railfleet administrator. If you're not an administrator you can contact your administrator to set this up for you.

Ready, set, go!

1. Creating zones in the administration panel

As a Railfleet administrator you can create new geographical zones in the administration panel by following these steps.

Once you've drawn your zone you'll notice that you can connect this zone to a label. If you already created a label for the type of zone you just set up, you can select this label from the drop down menu. If you didn't create any labels yet you can follow the the steps described below (part 2 and 3 of this article).

2. Creating the geolocation category

The next step in setting up the "inside zone" notification is creating a "Geoloc" category in the administration panel: go to the administration page and head over to the "Label" section.

Click on the "Categories" tab and click on the green "add category" button on the right hand side of the page.

Enter "Geoloc" (or any other name) in the "Name" field and check the box next to "is operational" if you wish to show the category labels as a filter option in the operational dashboard.

At the bottom of the form you'll see another form with the title "Labels",  this is what we'll create next. But first, save the "Geoloc" category using the save button at the right hand side of the page.

3. Creating labels to go into the "Geoloc" category

Once you've created the category called "Geoloc" it's time to create the labels that will be part of the category (e.g. geographical zones): go back to the "Label" section in the administration menu and click on the "Labels" link.

Click on the green "Add label" button on the right hand side of the page.

Next, enter the name of one of your location types in the "Name" field (e.g. "ZoneNorth") and select the category this label should be part of. In the case of our location type this is the category "Geoloc".

Then, select the users or contact lists who need to be contacted when an action is performed concerning this label (e.g. when a locomotive enters in a zone with the label "ZoneSouth")

Once that's done, you need to select the zones that belong in this label (e.g. all the zones you created earlier).

Almost there! You've now set up all the necessary items to create the notification rule that will notify you when an asset enters a certain zone.

4. Create new notification rule

Now it's time to set up the notification rule itself.

To do so you go back to the administration menu and head over to the "Notification" section. Go to the "Notification rules" tab and, on the next page, click on the green "Add notification rule" button.

Next, give your notification rule a name. Check the boxes below the description field to set the notification rule to active, to enable email notifications and to show the notification in the alert tab in the Operational dashboard.

Then scroll down to the "Event type" section in the form and select "Inside zone" from the list. A new field called "Filter zone labels" will appear. Choose the zone label the notification should be applied to (e.g. the label called "ZoneSouth"). The notification will apply to all the zones that are part of the label you select.

Then go to the "Send notifications to users/contact lists using:" section. Select the "Geoloc" category you created earlier from the drop down list below "Category" and choose "Label of the zone" below "Source" to inform everyone connected to the zone, or "Label of the asset" to inform everyone connected to the asset.

You can also contact both the people connected to the asset and the people connected to the zone by clicking on "Add another Diffusion Rule" and add a second "Geoloc" category.

Or, you can send the notification only to the people that are connected to both labels by selecting "Label of both (asset and zone)":

By doing this you ensure that the right people will be contacted when a locomotive enters a zone.

If you wish to inform specific people that are not part of the list you set up earlier (when creating the zone or asset labels) you can add these in the "Always notify these users" section.

If you only wish to send notifications when specific assets or asset classes enter a zone, go to the "Filter" tab and restrict the notifications in the "Restrict notifications to these assets" section. If you don't choose any assets the notification will be sent for all your locomotives (when they enter a zone).

Now save your new notification rule using the save button on the right hand side of the page and you're all set! You'll be able to change this notification rule at any time in the administration panel.
