Telematics data

Search through the available data for an asset

Updated over a week ago

You can use the Railgenius telematics data module to view and analyse the data of a specific asset and perform diagnostics.

Functional description of telematic data

For a short explanation of how telematic data is collected and what type of information is available, please refer to the article Functional description of telematic data.

Where can you access your telematics data?

From the Railnova home page, select "Telematics data" in the Railgenius section.

Select the asset, the type of message and the time range for which you wish to see the data:

The corresponding data will automatically appear underneath the search area.

Detailed steps on how to filter, download and customise the Telematics data table are explained below.

Another way to explore the telematic data sent by the Railster is by using our Data Inspector.

Example of how to use the telematics data: viewing fault codes

If you are retrieving fault codes from your assets, you can get an overview of the fault codes that have been triggered by selecting the appropriate message type from the "message type" field: "event_mtu_41", "event_emd_display", "event_cat_data_link_3500b", etc.

Select the relevant asset, then open the message type dropdown to see which message types are available for that asset:

After selecting the type of fault code, you will get the list of fault codes that have been triggered for the asset and the time frame you have indicated in the search section.

Filtering telematics data

To show the exact data you wish to analyse, you can use the filters above the table that holds all the data.

You must first choose the asset, then a message type. You should then select a time range, usually 2 or 3 days maximum at once; otherwise, not all messages can be displayed. You can also use more advanced filters if necessary. Once you have selected all the parameters you need, click on "Apply filters".

Note that by default, the past three months of data are available on the telematics data page. If you wish to analyse older data, please use the "Data export" function.

The filtered results will automatically be shown. By default, 500 results are shown, but you can select to display up to 5000 results. Select the number of results from the dropdown menu, then click on the refresh button ("Apply filters") on the top right.

You can also select the columns you wish to show in the table. This way, you only see the information that's relevant to you.

Downloading a selection of data

You can easily download the data you see on the Telematics data page for further analysis. You can either download the unfiltered data or download only the information you need using the filters.

At the top of the page, you'll see a few download options: you can either download the data as a JSON, CSV, or XLSX file.

Click the corresponding button, and your download will start right away. The JSON file will open in a new browser window, and the CSV and XLSX files will be saved in the "downloads" folder of your device.

The CSV, XLSX, and JSON download on the Telematics data page will work for data sets of maximum 5000 records (one record = one row in the data table).

For larger data sets, you can use the Data export feature, as explained in this article.

Timestamp

Please note that all data is stored internally in UTC. The time stamps displayed online in the telematics data are displayed in the time zone of your profile, which does not apply to the downloads (offline). These remain in UTC time.

Hiding or showing columns on the telematics data page

When viewing the Telematics data page, you might see a lot of information that's not useful for what you want to analyse. That's why you can easily select the columns you wish to display in the table.

To select the columns you wish to see, click on "Columns" on the right-hand side of the page.

Then use the filter to search for the items you wish to display in the table. Check or uncheck the checkboxes to show or hide columns. Click on "Columns" again to close the menu.

If you wish to view the unfiltered results again, go back to "Columns" and select "All" right below the "Search" field.

Click on "None" to uncheck all the items in the menu at once.

Creating presets

To work faster and more efficiently, you can create presets from frequently used symbols. Presets are predefined sets of symbols that allow you to visualise a set of graphs for a vehicle in a single click.

Choose the symbols that you need by ticking the box next to them, then go to Presets and click on "Save columns as new preset".

Give it a name and click on the "Create preset" button. The saved preset will be available for future use and will be shared within your company.

Whenever you click on "Presets", the presets you previously saved will be shown, and you can then select the one you need.

When you download telematics data, only the columns that you selected will be included.

Managing presets

If you saved a preset and would like to rename it or delete it, you can do so as a company administrator directly in the admin menu.

Go to the administration panel on the Railnova platform, then navigate to "Presets" in the Railgenius section.

Click on "Telematics columns presets" to view all presets of your company for the Telematics data page.

By clicking on the blue link (the name of the preset), you can

  • rename the preset

  • review the message type

  • view the company (your company is predefined)

  • review the parameters (chosen telematics data) included in the preset

  • modify the preset and save your changes

  • delete the preset

If you do not have admin rights, please contact a Railnova administrator within your company. Your admin will rename or delete the preset for your company.
