Create component types
Updated over a week ago

As a company administrator, you can define each component type you want to track and follow up on in the Component management module.

Component type can be the asset class, a bogie, a CAT engine, etc.

Add component type

Go to the Admin menu, navigate to the section Component management and then click Component types to view all component types that have already been created by your company.

If your desired component type is not available yet, you can create it by clicking on the green "Add component type" button in the upper right corner of your screen.

A new form will appear on your screen where you can populate the following fields:

Name

Give your component type a unique name, such as the asset class. As this field is marked with an asterisk, it is a mandatory field to fill in.

Category

As the name field is a free text field that enables the creation of any component type in any language without specifying its exact role, categories enable Railnova to apply some logic to the type of components.

This field is a purely Railnova internal tool and is to be left unpopulated.

Description

You can add an internal description applicable to the component type. Filling this field is not mandatory. If you don't want to add a description, leave the field empty.

Company

Your company is already predefined in the form.

Subtype

  • Unique repairables: are components that are unique and for which a serial number is assigned (e.g. compressor, bogie, engine, etc.) and for which the location and history of movements are tracked (on the asset or in the inventory). The components can be repaired and re-used and put back on the asset again.
Please note that an asset should always have a component type with the subtype unique repairable. You won't be able to add or remove your maintenance plan to or from an asset with a component type with a different subtype.

  • Non-unique repairables: are components whose uniqueness we can't track through a serial number. As they have no serial number, their location and history of movements aren't tracked.

  • Ware parts (e.g. brake pads) are components that can be installed on the asset and, after use, won't be repaired but disposed of.

  • Consumables: the number of parts added to the stock won't be tracked (e.g. oil, sand, etc.), and no track will be kept on usage or history either.

Documents of component type

You can also add an unlimited number of documents to the component types by clicking on "Add another Document Of Type". You can read about the use of documents in the following article.

Once you are finished with filling in the form, don't forget to click on the blue 'Save' button to save your changes.

To define the location of each component in the component structure, follow the steps described in this article.
